Useful Information - Moloa'a Bay and Kauai

About Kauai

Kauai, also known as "The Garden Isle" is known for its lush landscape and magnificent waterfalls. The island is one of the oldest known land areas in the world with most of the island being rural, forested and protected from commercial development.

Kauai hosts several diverse climates including semi-tropical, swamp land and desert. There are over 40 white sand beaches or 50 miles of beach; mountains that reach over 3,500 feet high and the only navigable rivers in Hawaii.

Kauai receives the most rainfall anywhere in the world; however, don't let that be a concern to you as most of the rain occurs in the interior of the island around
Mt. Wai`ale`ale. This area is mostly inaccessible. Showers are more often fleeting, with sunny skies that follow almost immediately.

Tips and FAQs

If you are a first-time visitor to the island, please read some questions from other first-time visitors. We hope that this section will be helpful to you.

How far is the beach from the house?

The beach is about 100 feet from the house. A beach access path is provided for the residents and guests at Moloa`a Bay that is about 200 feet away from the house.

Will we need a car?

No way around it as there is not public transportation on the island. There are rental car companies at the Lihue Airport. Ask your travel agent about car/plane packages. Sometimes you can get your rental car cheaper if you book it at the same time as your flight. If you rent a convertible or jeep, don't forget your hat and sunscreen!

Car Rental

Rental cars can be attractive to thieves. Carry what you will need with you in a day pack and try not to leave anything in the car. Hide your maps as they are a tip off that you are a tourist. Ask for two sets of keys to your rental car - just in case.

Flight Tip

Ear plugs or Noise Canceling headphones may help reduce ambient noise on planes and fatigue.

How close are grocery stores and eateries?

You pass through Kapa`a on your way to the house. There you will find groceries, gas, ATM, video rentals and the like. Princeville is about fifteen minutes north of Moloa`a Bay.

Where are the waves?

In the winter months the surf is best on the north shore, in the summer months the south shore offers the best waves.

What kind of clothes should we pack?

If you're going to do some hiking, be sure to pack clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and some hiking shoes. A light jacket is nice for evenings and car rides if you rent a convertible. If you're worried about taking in too much sun during your stay, bring a light-weight cover-up. A hat, sunglasses and sun block are always great ideas. Some visitors have recommended clothes that dry quickly for tropical climates, like synthetics or silks.

What can we do at the house?

Besides relaxing and enjoying the beach, there are many interesting books available to read as well as cards and a variety of games to play to help you enjoy a lazy and relaxing day. Many of our guests have brought along their own games and books and will often leave a book behind for the next guests to enjoy.

What's the weather like?

The weather on Kauai is nearly perfect all year round. Anticipate some rain on your stay though - this is a tropical rain forest. Temperatures range from the 70's to the 80's. Trade winds provide nice, cooling breezes. Ocean temperatures are between 70-76 Fahrenheit round.

Saving money while on vacation

If you enjoy the benefits of the savings book 'The Entertainment Book' www.entertainment.com  you will find it useful on Kauai as well. The book runs about $25.00, but you will quickly get this investment back the first day or two of visiting Hawaii.

Gear

If you have your own snorkel, fins and mask, bring them. You may find it easier than renting everyday.
